Energy policy positions 2009: NRW Chamber of Industry and Commerce
On 29 April the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in North Rhine-Westphalia presented its 'Energy policy positions 2009', which sought to draw up a set of requirements for reliable, cost-effective and environmentally acceptable energy supply from the perspective of business and industry in NRW.
This position statement had been preceded by an intensive process of scientific dialogue with NRW industry representatives. The year before, a series of workshops had been held under the banner 'Energy for NRW: facts, opinions and perspectives', whose aim was to debate a range of subjects affecting the energy sector. These events attracted over 300 companies representing all CIC activities in NRW and provided an active forum in which they could explain their problems and present their views and perceptions. 'Energy policy positions 2009' is therefore the result of a careful and detailed analysis of the different aspects and interests put forward in the course of this energy dialogue.
In its 'Energy policy positions 2009' the NRW industry sector also stated that coal was one of the major indigenous sources of energy and that 'all options (must) be retained for the use of local energy sources'“; here consideration had to be given to 'indigenous coal as a serious option'.
As well as identifying other key milestones for cheap and futureproof energy supply the NRW business and industry sector also sees supply security as a fundamental prerequisite for a successful industrial centre. Safeguarding this not only requires efficient energy utilisation but will also call for a diversified approach to the fuel mix, arrangements with politically stable supplier countries, a reduced reliance on imports and, finally, keeping open the option of indigenous energy resources.
