IEA: Security of supply must be put back on the agenda
Security of energy and raw-materials supply has recently been put under the spotlight, especially by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
According to the IEA's assessment 'the alarm bells are ringing'. In the media the talk is all about the global battle to secure increasingly scarce resources: fuels, industrial raw materials and now foodstuffs too. Recent months have witnessed a real explosion in prices. One of the main reasons for this is that supplies on the world market cannot keep pace with the rapidly escalating demand, especially from the densely populated and growth hungry emerging nations. In the energy sector there are therefore huge long-term questions hanging over issues such as the security of oil and gas supplies. From our own national viewpoint only coal can provide a large measure of supply security.
