Coal in Indonesia – political, economic and technological aspects


As well as the geological conditions and the existing mining capacity, factors such as national credit rating and the raw-materials infrastructure are decisive when making investment decisions in the overseas mining sector.

Indonesia is certainly worth looking at in this respect, for the country has gone through major political change since the end of the Suharto regime in the mid-1990s. The coal industry is becoming increasingly important as a player in the international marketplace. Domestic energy supplies are for the most part based on oil and gas, which are also produced locally (1, 2).
