Immediate shutdown is off the agenda – the issue now is to ensure the long-term future of an indigenous core production base.

The coalition parties have in fact announced that after the expected Government reshuffle they will negotiate with all sides on the framework conditions for a socially-compatible phasing-out of the subsidised mining industry – and then make their decision.

It has also been confirmed that the legally binding decisions on allocations to the coal industry, which run to the end of 2008, are to be categorically adhered to. Nothing else would be acceptable in a constitutional state. At the same time ....
