In 2005 the German coal market comprised 63 million tce – about a third of which was met from indigenous production – and accounted for about 13% of the country’s total primary energy consumption. This was slightly down on previous years, the coal market having decreased in size by 5 million tce – or 9% – since the year 2000. The power supply industry purchased two thirds of this coal supply, namely 44 mtce, while the steel manufacturers took 17 million tce. While the household heating market and other small consumers only accounted for 2 million tce in 2005, sales in this sector actually doubled in relation to the previous year due to the fact that coal had become competitive again as a fuel for heating. Coal could therefore find an interesting niche market here.
